Why Do We Have Music Databases?

 

Every day thousands of songs are being released but where are they being stored? In huge databases that are either free of charge to the public or require a paid subscription for the usage of their services.

Each music database provides different service and there is stored information on the discographies of producing and performing artists. These databases retrieve information using the metadata of each audio file using ISWC (International Standard Musical Work Code - which is unique, permanent and internationally recognized reference number for the identification of musical works) and ISRC (International Standard Recording Code - which is used to administer rights audio or music video recordings) codes. Composer and artist information are also helpful when identifying and storing the musical piece.

The aim of the music databases is to store tracks and retrieve the music data from the audio files making it easier for listeners and performers to organize their music.

Normal VS Fuzzy Database

 

A normal database is perceived as a collection of information regarding records or music data stored digitally. Whereas, Fuzzy database can compute vague or incomplete information using fuzzy theory.

Many of the songs tend to have imperfect or insufficient data that a normal database can't process. This is why the Fuzzy databases intend to understand flawed information about a musical piece and reproduce it directly in a database.

There are 2 main techniques that can represent imperfect information in databases - the possibilistic approach and the similarity relation-based approach. An easy method to start working with a fuzzy track is to add a fuzzy membership degree to each audio file, which is an attribute ranging between 0 and 1.
